Meis Adası
Meis adası gezisi, 2014 yazında, çok sevgili dostlarım, Çoşkun ve Gökçeimam aileleriyle gittiğim, efsanevi Kaş tatilinin bir uzantısı. Kaş’a kadar gelmişken bu adaya gitmemek olmaz dedik. Zira ada, Türkiye’ye sadece 2 km uzaklıkta.
Meis, iki katlı, büyük, pastel renklerdeki tipik rum konaklarının ve dışarıya masalarını atmış bar,cafe ve restoranların, rıhtım boyunca sıralandığı gerçek bir masal adası. Herşeyden önce, haydi eller havaya şeklinde bir tatil anlayışınız varsa, Meis size göre bir yer değil 🙂
Adaya ayak bastığımız andan itibaren hissettiğimiz duygular: dinginlik, huzur ve sakinlikti. Burada bir gün geçirmek gerçek anlamıyla bir terapi gibi. Burası zamanın daha yavaş aktığı, insanın içini sebepsiz bir huzur ve mutlulukla dolduran çok keyifli bir yer.
Geçmişte, rıhtımın üstlerindeki tepelere kadar yayılan evleri ile 15.000 kişinin yaşadığı Meis, antik çağlardan beri, derin doğal limanıyla gemiler için bir sığınak görevi görüyormuş. Ne yazik ki ikinci dünya savaşı sırasında cephaneliğin patlamasıyla çıkan büyük yangında adanın yarısından fazlası yanmış ve bir daha da eski günlerine dönememiş. Şu anda adada daimi olarak sadece 400 kişi yaşıyor ve adanın en büyük gelir kaynağı da turizm.*

Meis Adası – Ne Yenilir Ne İçilir
Ne yazik ki Meis, diğer Yunan adaları kadar ucuz değil. Burada fiyatlar % 25-30 kadar daha pahalı. Balıklı, deniz mezeli, içkili bir yemek için, kiklad adalarında 15-18 Euro hesap öderken burada 22-25 Euro arası hesap ödedik.
Alexandra’s Resturant
Meis’de kaldığımız ilk günün akşamı ve ertesi gün öğlen olmak üzere iki kere yemek yediğimiz Alexandra’s, adanın en iyi balık restoranı olarak gösteriliyor. Biz akşam yemeği için iki tane içi feta peyniri, domates ve biber ile doldurulmuş bütün ızgara kalamar, ızgara ahtapot, 2 porsiyon ızgara deniz levreği ve Yunan salatası söyledik. Yemeğin yanında bize 40 cc’lik uzo eşlik etti. Kişi başı 25 euro hesap ödedik.
Bir sonraki günün öğleni , Kaş’a dönüşe geçmeden önce, deniz mahsullü spagetti ve bir kadeh beyaz şaraptan oluşan hafif bir öğlen yemeği yedik. Hem yemek hem de şarap oldukça lezzetliydi. Kişi başı 13 euro hesap verdik.
Olive garden
Meis’e Geldiğimiz günün öğleni yemek yediğimiz Olive Garden, dışardan oldukca hoş ve şirin gözüken, asma yapraklarının altında yemek yediğiniz bir restoran. Aksam balık ve deniz mezeleri yiyeceğimizden dolayı, öğlen geleneksel Yunan mutfağından yemekler tercih ettik. Lahana sarma, musakka, Yunan salatası ve reçine şarabına kişi başı 14 euro verdik. Özellikle lahana sarması çok iyiydi.
Meis Adası – Nerede Kalınır
Adanın küçüklüğünden dolayı, pek fazla alternatif yok. Çok şık birkaç tane butik otel var ama fiyatlar biraz pahalı. Biz Poseidon ve Agnanti Studios‘a fiyat sorduk. Bizim gittiğimiz dönem biraz sezon dışı olmasına rağmen, fiyatlar oda başı 110 ile 90 Euro arasındaydı.
Neyse ki pasaport kontrolünden geçtikten sonra tanıştığımız George imdadımıza yetişti ve onun kiraladığı evlerden birinde kaldık. George, adanın en kilit adamlarından biri. Teknesiyle getir götür hizmeti veriyor. Rıhtım hattındaki kafesinde, hemen deniz kenarına attığı koltuklara oturup, denize nazır kahvaltı edebilir veya tatlı ve çay keyfi yapabilirsiniz. Ayrıca size uygun fiyatlı ev ya da oda bulabilir. Kısacası adaya iner inmez George’u bulun 🙂
Bizim kaldığımız ev, tipik iki katlı bir rum evinin alt katıydı. Rıhtıma 100 metre uzaklığında olan ev, büyük salonumsu bir oda,mutfak ve banyodan oluşuyordu. Aynı zamanda evin arkasında, 25-30 metrekarelik bir bahçe de vardı. Ev için kişi başı 20 Euro ödedik.
Meis Adası – Plajlar
Belki de Meis’in en kötü yanı adanın doğru düzgün bir plajının olmaması. Deniz son derece temiz, berrak ve güzel olmasına rağmen adanın içinde en azından bizim alışık olduğumuz anlamda bir plaj yok. ‘U’ şeklindeki rıhtımın sol ve sağ kollarında bazı Kafe ve pansiyonlar, rıhtım üzerine şemsiye ve şezlonglar koymuşlardı. Hemen buraların önünden rıhtıma çakılan merdivenlerle denize giriliyor. Deniz,ilk başta sığ başlayıp sonra derinleşiyor. Rıhtım deyince aklınıza kirli ve bulanık bir su gelmesin. Aksine su oldukça temiz ve berrak. Deniz tabanı ise taşlık.
St. George
Bir başka alternatif de Meis’in hemen önündeki adacık üstüne kurulmuş olan St. George Beach Club’a gitmek. Biz gittiğimizde haziranın 2. haftası ve hafta içi olduğundan, beach club’in kendisi açık değildi ama şezlong ve şemsiyeleri yerleştirilmişti. Normalde 2 şezlong ve 1 şemsiye kirası 3,5 Euro imiş. Aynı zamanda tesisin kendi mutfağı ve barı olduğundan bütün gün burada geçirilebilir.
Bu adacıkta da bir kumsal yok. Merdivenlerle denize giriliyor. Denizin ilk girdiğiniz kısımları sığ ve kumlukken, açıldıkça kayalık olmaya başlıyor ki, şnorkel meraklıları güzel vakit geçirebilir. Ne yazık ki bizim gittiğimiz zaman hava çok rüzgarlı, deniz de çok sakin değildi. Bunlara rağmen burada yüzmekten inanılmaz keyif aldık.
Mavi Mağara
Meis’e gelmişken, mutlaka yapılması gereken aktivitelerden biri de, adanın arka tarafında yer alan Mavi mağaraya gitmek. Mavi mağaraya özellikle güneşin açısının daha alçak ve denizin daha sakin olduğu sabah saatlerinde gitmek daha makbul. Girişi alçak olan mağaranın, iç kısmında tavanı oldukça yüksek ve içerideki suyun rengi, inanılmaz bir neon mavisi. Biz sabah 09:30’da mağaranın önündeydik. O saatte bizden başka kimse olmadığı için, 15 dakika kadar da mavi mağaranın içinde yalnız başımıza yüzdük. Gerçekten müthiş bir deneyimdi. 5 kişi için gidiş dönüş ücreti olarak George’a toplamda 40 Euro ödedik.
Meis Adası – Nasıl Gidilir
Kaş rıhtımından her gün 09.30’da kalkan teknelerle, yarım saat içinde Meis’de olabilirsiniz. Daha önceden alınmış Schengen Vizeniz varsa 1 gün önceden pasaportları tur firmasına bırakmanız yeterli. Eğer Schengen vizeniz yoksa, Yunanistan’ın, Türkiye’ye yakın adalar (Midilli, Sakız, Samos, Kos, Rodos ve Meis ) için uygulamaya koyduğu “kapı vizesi programından” yararlanabilirsiniz. Tabi bu durumda pasaportunuzu 3,4 gün önceden tur firmasına teslim etmeniz gerekiyor. Vize ücreti, Schengen vizesi ile aynı ( 60 euro ) fakat ben bu vizeyi kesinlikle tavsiye etmiyorum çünkü en fazla 15 günlük ve sadece tek girişlik veriliyor. Bu yüzden eğer imkanınız varsa önceden Schengen vizesi almak daha mantıklı. Böylece aynı fiyata hem çok girişli hem de daha uzun süreli vizeniz olacak.
Cumhuriyet meydanında, Meis’e giden tekne ve tur firmalarının stantları gündüz ve gece boyunca açık. Bir çok firma olmasına rağmen fiyatlar hepsinde standart.
Biz Meis Express firmasını seçtik. Aynı gün için gidiş dönüş ücreti kişi başı 25 euro. Eğer adada konaklayıp başka bir gün dönerseniz de fiyat 33 euro. Yolun toplam 4 km olduğu düşünülürse, fiyat için en kibar şekilde fahiş denilebilir.
Günübirlik gidişlerde pasaport kontrolünden geçmek 10:30’u buluyor. Dönüşün de 16:30’da olduğunu düşünürsek, Meis’in gerçekten tadını çıkartabilmek için en azından 1 gün kalmak şart.
Aynı zamanda haftanın her günü Rodos ile karşılıklı feribot seferleri var. Pire limanından Meis’e direk sefer olmadığı için Rodos’dan aktarma yapılıyor.
A FAIRY TALE ISLAND: “KASTELLERIZO”
Kastellerizo Island vacation I went to with my dear friends Coskun and Gokceimam families, in 2014 summer, is an extention of my legendary Kas vacation. Since we came all the way to Kas it would not be fair not to see this island. The island is only 2 kilometers (3.2 miles) far from Turkey. This is a real fairytale island where typical pastel colored, big, two story Greek houses line up on its port together with the cafes and restaurants which lay their tables out of doors. First of all if you are into a fastpaced nightlife within your vacation Kastellerizo is so not the place for you 🙂 Since the moment we set foot on the island the emotions we felt were; stillness, peace and tranquility. Spending a day here is like a real therapy. This is a place where time passes slower thus it is a very idyllic place that fills a person with serenity and content.
In one’s day, with its 15.000 population and the houses stretching upwards the hill, Kastellerizo held a responsibility of being the natural dock for ships since the ancient times. Unfortunately during World War II the fire started in the armory burned more than half the island and the island never recovered from the incident. Currently only 400 people reside in the island and the primary source of income is tourism.
WHAT TO EAT
Unfortunately Kastellerizo is not as affordable as the other Greek Islands. Prices here are approximately around 25-30% higher compared. For a meal including fish, side dish and alcohol, while it cost about 15-18 Euros in surrounding islands, in Meis we paid about 22-25 Euros.
Alexandra’s Restaurant
Staying at the island, we had two meals from the legendary favored restaurant of the island Alexandra’s, one was our first dinner and the second was the following day’s lunch. We had two, full sized grilled squid filled with feta cheese, tomatoes and peppers alongside grilled octopus, 2 portions of grilles sea bass and Greek salad. Beside our dinner we had a 40 cc Ouzo and paid 25 Euros per person.
The next day before we took off, we had a light lunch consisting of seafood pasta and wine. Both the meal and the wine were very tasty. We paid 13 Euros per person.
Olive garden
The day we arrived we had lunch at the Olive Garden; a restaurant located under vine the leaves that seemslovely from the outside. We would be eating seafood and side dishes at night, so for lunch we mostly prefered traditional dishes from the Greek cuisine. Having stuffed cabbage rolls, moussaka, Green salad and resinated wine we paid 14 Euroes per person. Especially the cabbage rolls were amazing.
WHERE TO STAY
Due to its small size there are not many options. There are some posh boutique hotels but the prices are a bit high. We asked for the prices twice. Though it was off-season, the prices were between 90 and 100 Euros per room. And then there is the new lodging that opened up this year, which is a bit more reasonable. The price there is 60 Euros per room. Luckily, George whom we met right after the passport control, came to our rescue and we stayed in one of houses he rented. George is one of the key men of the island. With his boat he runs errands. In his cafe, by the dockline, lounging on the seats by the seaside he arranged, you can have your breakfast with the seaview or have a peaceful teatime. Furthermore he can find you affortable housing or a room. To conclude; find George as soon as you get the island 🙂
The house we stayed in was the lower level of a typical two-story Greek house. The house, 100 meters (328 feet) away from dock, consisted of a big saloon-like room, a kitchen and a bathroom. Also there was a garden behind the house, size of 25-30 (250-320 squarefeet) squaremeters. For the house we paid 20 Euros per person.
BEACHES
Probably the worst thing about Kastellerizo is that the island does not have a decent beach. Though the sea is extremely clean, clear and beautiful the island does not host a beach at least the way we are used to. On the “U” shaped port’s righthand and lefthand sides have umbrellas and chaise lounges put by some cafes and lodgings. Right in front of these there are ladders decending into the sea. Though the sea is shallow at first it gets deeper. When I say “ports” you immediately imagine a dirty and blurred sea but on the contrary the water is extremely clean and clear. The sea surface is of stones.
St. George
Another option is to visit the St. George Beach Club located on the holm in front of the island. Since we went on the 2. week of June and it was a weekday the beach club itself wasn’t yet open but their umbrellas and chaise lounges were out. Normally it was said that the fee for renting 2 chaise lounges and an umbrella is 3,5 Euros. Because the establishment owns its own kitchen and its own bar a whole day can be spent here. This holm does not host a beach. Sea entry is through ladders. Though the entry level of the sea is shallow and sandy as you go it becomes a rocky terrain underneath the sea which can be very pleasing for snorkellers. Unfortunately it was very windy the day we went and though the sea was not very calm we still had an unbelievable amount of fun out of swimming here.
The Blue Cave
En passant Kastellerizo, one of the activities you must do is to visit the Blue Cave located on the back side of the island. It is more palatable to visit the Blue Cave on the early morning hours where the sun is not high up and the sea is calmer. With its low entrance the cave has a high ceiling within and the color of the water in the cave is an unbelievable neon blue. We were at the entrance of the cave at 9:30. Since there were no other people at that hour, we were able to stroll within the Blue Cave on our own for about 15 minutes. It really was an amazing experience. For 5 people, we paid George a total of 40 Euros for the way and back.
HOW TO GET THERE
You can reach Kastellerizo in half an hour via the ferries that leave Kas docks at 09:30 everyday. For Meis the journey there and back costs 33 Euros per person and it is the standard fee for all companies. Considering the way is 4 kilometers (2.4 miles) in total you could say it is a bit of an extravagant price. For daily visits it takes up until 10:30 to pass through the passport control. Considering the journey back is at 16:30 it is essential to at least spend one night there to be able to enjoy Meis.
Also there are ferry rides within the island and Rhodes Island daily. Since there are no direct trip to Piraeus port a transit from Rhodes is necessary.
